Mercado Bitcoin Halts Transactions Following Security Incident
Brazilian digital asset platform Mercado Bitcoin has temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals after irregular activity drained platform-linked wallets over numerous blockchain networks.
Blockchain security investigators calculate that upward of $40 million in cryptocurrencies shifted during the event. The suspicious actions spanned ecosystems such as Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche, BNB Chain, and Stellar.
Based on data distributed by crypto security researchers, the heaviest volume of transfers happened in roughly 34 minutes, specifically between 06:19 and 06:53 UTC on Monday.
The assets reportedly moved to fresh addresses encompass approximately 2,852 ETH, 106 BTC, 10,700 SOL, 6.7 million XLM, and 77,000 AVAX, together with upwards of 200 additional tokens.
Even so, Mercado Bitcoin has not independently verified the projected $40 million financial impact.
Exchange Says Incident Is Contained
Through a public statement on X, Mercado Bitcoin indicated that it pinpointed and rapidly contained a security breach. The firm further noted that its user base experienced no harm and that customer data remained uncompromised.
Inflows and outflows of funds stay paused as a precautionary measure while the exchange looks into the event, tracks the missing assets, and collaborates with law enforcement.
The company additionally released destination wallet addresses spanning multiple chains to assist security professionals and industry peers in tracking the routed funds.
Analysts have not yet determined the method the bad actor utilized to gain transaction authorization capabilities. The identified transactions appeared as standard blockchain transfers rather than the outcome of a verified smart contract vulnerability.
Tether Freezes $4.5 Million in USDT
Tether chief Paolo Ardoino verified that roughly $4.5 million in USDT associated with the breach had been locked. This measure supplies a potential recovery path for a fraction of the missing capital, though the overall disposition of the remainder of the assets is still uncertain.
This event arrives only days after Binance encountered a separate $6.3 billion security breach, which the FBI tied to the North Korean hacking collective known as TraderTraitor.
Notwithstanding the close timing, public proof linking the Mercado Bitcoin security event to the Binance hack does not currently exist.
At present, the primary inquiries in the probe focus on the aggregate sum impacted, the mechanism of unauthorized access, and the timeline for restoring standard exchange operations. These findings could carry wider consequences for the methods digital asset exchanges use to protect wallets and oversee assets distributed across numerous blockchain networks.
