The Zcash network has rolled out its NU7 upgrade, bringing quicker transaction confirmations, expanded capacity for private payments, and major adjustments to the blockchain fee model. The network transition took place early Friday, November 6, trimming the target block interval down from 75 seconds to a swift 25 seconds.
Block 3,543,405 brought the upgrade live at roughly 02:34 UTC, marking a milestone for the privacy-centric cryptocurrency. These modifications aim to render private transactions more viable for routine payments, deposits on exchanges, and cross-chain transfers.
NU7 has successfully activated on mainnet. A new era of Zcash is here.

Following stabilization of block production, users can expect their initial transaction confirmation roughly three times faster. Platforms requiring three confirmations could see wait times drop from nearly four minutes down to approximately 75 seconds.
NU7 Upgrade Introduces Faster Blocks and Greater Transaction Capacity
The contraction of block intervals stands as one of the most prominent features of NU7.
Previously, Zcash aimed for a fresh block every 75 seconds. The shift to a 25-second target enables the network to build blocks more rapidly, thereby boosting its ability to process private payments. Network specifications indicate that maximum throughput for basic Orchard shielded transactions could scale from roughly 2.9 up to 6.6 transactions per second.
Additionally, the upgrade sets thresholds on private transaction volume within single blocks. These caps aim to shield wallets—which must scan the ledger to spot incoming funds—from being overloaded by excessive activity. Consequently, worst-case daily bandwidth needs for light wallets may drop from 271 MB to roughly 169 MB.
Yet, the accelerated block cadence also brings technical hurdles. Miners have a narrower window to download and verify competing blocks ahead of the next creation cycle, which can drive up orphan or discarded block counts.
Simulations run by developers indicated a discarded-block rate of 3.43% under stress testing at 25-second intervals, contrasting with 1.57% under the older framework.
Zcash Changes Transaction Fees and Retires Original Privacy Pool
Alongside execution speeds, NU7 revamps aspects of the Zcash economic structure.
The updated guidelines direct 40% of transaction fees to miners, while the remaining 60% is directed into a reserve designed to bolster subsequent mining rewards.
This reserve structure is projected to start releasing funds around February 2031, assisting the network as block rewards diminish over time. Another milestone involves Sprout, the foundational Zcash privacy pool launched back in 2016.
By deprecating legacy version 4 transactions, NU7 renders the roughly 12,224 ZEC still sitting in Sprout unable to be spent. Developer Sean Bowe has broached the topic of a potential recovery pathway, though no formal remedy had been cleared when the upgrade went live.
Zcash Technical Outlook After NU7 Activation
While this software refresh counts as a foundational protocol milestone, its ultimate effect on the market valuation of ZEC is yet to be determined.
Market participants will be monitoring whether enhanced transaction speeds and wider privacy throughput spark higher network utilization and organic demand.
For the immediate term, attention centers on the seamless adaptation of nodes, miners, exchanges, and wallet applications to the new consensus standards.
Can NU7 help Zcash strengthen its position in the privacy-focused cryptocurrency sector?
Will faster private payments attract new users and institutional interest, or will the upgrade’s impact take longer to become visible in ZEC’s market performance?
