AI IPO dilution is shaping up to be the next big test for markets, and one well-known crypto analyst warns it could shake risk assets before setting up crypto’s next rally. Analyst Cites AI Share Dilution as Catalyst for Crypto Rally

An upcoming wave of AI IPO dilution is emerging as a major test for financial markets, with a prominent cryptocurrency analyst warning it could disrupt risk assets prior to sparking a new crypto bull run.

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, contends that forthcoming public offerings from SpaceX, Anthropic, and potentially OpenAI risk inflicting heavy losses on retail investors who purchase shares at their initial listing prices. In a post on X, he previewed his newest essay, “D is for Dilution,” which outlines how the subsequent unlocking of insider shares could flood the market with fresh supply and pull asset prices downward.

The projected figures are substantial. Hayes calculates that approximately 8.6 billion shares of SpaceX could become available for trading by June 2027, representing roughly half of its current share total. Regarding Anthropic, he projects that early public backers could experience up to 83% dilution across that identical timeframe as transfer restrictions expire. OpenAI has not yet submitted paperwork for an IPO, though Hayes anticipates a comparable scenario should it pursue one.

At first glance, the dilution associated with AI initial public offerings appears negative for all risk-oriented sectors, including digital assets. In the near term, Hayes believes it likely will be.

However, the broader thesis paints a significantly more encouraging picture for the cryptocurrency space.

What AI IPO Dilution Means For The Market

The core of Hayes’ argument is that the artificial intelligence trade relies heavily on market sentiment. Participants fund the industry because they anticipate future profitability, and share valuations serve as the primary metric for that confidence.

Should SpaceX, Anthropic, or OpenAI trade beneath their initial offering prices due to insider liquidations, Hayes expects market participants to question the viability of the enterprises themselves, independent of their underlying operational results.

These stock market debuts involve more than just equities. Hayes asserts that these corporations are going public to gain direct access to corporate debt markets. Depressed stock valuations would compel bond investors to demand higher yields, substantially elevating the financial burden of constructing AI infrastructure.

Because traditional financial institutions are heavily integrated into funding that infrastructure expansion, a slowdown in artificial intelligence lending translates to decelerating credit creation and reduced dollar liquidity throughout the financial system. This mechanism explains how AI IPO dilution could exert downward pressure on Bitcoin and other digital assets in the immediate future.

Markets already experienced a preview of these anxieties when semiconductor manufacturers and technology equities sparked a sharp downturn on Wall Street, with Bitcoin declining in tandem.

AI Has Been Draining Crypto’s Liquidity

This is where the more favorable perspective enters the discussion.

Hayes has long maintained that Bitcoin tracks overall dollar liquidity, requiring expanding monetary supplies to regain upward momentum. In recent analyses, he calculated that roughly $1.5 trillion in AI-focused debt was issued between 2022 and 2026, successfully financing the artificial intelligence boom while leaving minimal spare capital for Bitcoin.

Stated differently, the AI sector has been competing directly with digital assets for the identical pool of capital. If AI IPO dilution dampens the pace of AI credit creation, that monetary competition subsides.

Why AI IPO Dilution Could End In A Crypto Rally

The concluding section of the essay offers its most optimistic outlook.

Hayes suggests that if the artificial intelligence bubble eventually precipitates a wider financial downturn, central banks will intervene with financial rescues. Historical precedent indicates what typically succeeds such interventions: the creation of new currency, declining real yields, and a subsequent flight toward scarce assets.

He contends that this fresh influx of liquidity could once again drive Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem higher. This mirrors the exact framework that propelled crypto’s most substantial rallies following previous cycles of monetary expansion.

To be explicit, Hayes is not forecasting an immediate market surge. His investment firm, Maelstrom, intends to remain on the sidelines until monetary conditions improve. Nonetheless, his roadmap for long-term investors highlights near-term volatility succeeded by a considerably more hospitable climate for digital currencies.

Bitcoin Can’t Be Diluted

Crypto investors possess an additional rationale for viewing this narrative with optimism.

Hayes points to Zcash as a cautionary illustration. Even with ZEC achieving record market valuations, he emphasizes that numerous participants who purchased tokens during its 2016 debut remain at a loss due to early supply mechanics.

The digital asset industry has grappled with this reality for years. Traders routinely evaluate token release schedules, vesting phases, and inflation metrics prior to acquiring assets. Wall Street is only now confronting this identical hurdle through mega-cap AI market debuts.

Bitcoin occupies the opposite end of that spectrum. Its total supply is capped permanently at 21 million units, features no corporate insiders awaiting the expiration of transfer restrictions, and post-2024 halving metrics place its annual issuance rate beneath 1%. While AI IPO dilution threatens to expand equity supplies by double-digit percentages within a single year, Bitcoin’s supply schedule remains fixed and entirely transparent.

Should supply dilution emerge as the defining financial narrative of 2027, this stark contrast could solidify into one of Bitcoin’s most compelling value propositions—particularly for institutional players already utilizing spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.

What do you think happens next?

Will AI IPO dilution drag crypto lower first, or will the liquidity that follows kick off the next major crypto rally?
